The children are so excited to see the caterpillars!

We spoke about their features and what is in the pot to help them survive. The children knew that they will turn into a butterfly. We looked closely at the spikes and the children thought that this was to stop people from picking them up. The children asked about the web they could see inside and asked where the spider was hiding. We spoke about the food and when they spit it out. The children demonstrated a good understanding how what will happen at each stage and made links to the butterflies they have already observed.

Science

We've had a great day being Hartsholme scientists!


The children were given a challenge from the robbers from the story. This entailed the children completing a science experiment and learning how to predict. We had a look inside the sack to see if it was our IPad's that they stole. However, when we opened it we took out five bottles of vinegar and five tubs of soda. We then looked under the mystery blanket where we had some instructions. As a class we discussed what predicting is and the children said, "it's going to explode, it will go pop, it will bubble." We then tested our predictions by doing the experiment which the children LOVED doing. We added sparkles and colour to see what would happen.





The other experiments included making gloop using cornflour and water. This developed new words such as "runny, soft, slimy, sticky, smooth." The children watched the gloop change properties as they picked it up and watched it drip through their fingers. They enjoyed watching it drip into the tray and tried to catch each others drips.

What the ladybird heard..

This week the children have been making wanted posters to try and find the robbers out of the story book 'What the Ladybird Heard'. We discussed the purpose of a wanted poster and what features it needs to have by looking at some examples. The children then helped to make a rubric and used this when creating their own. The children used the story to look at what the robbers where wearing and selected the right colours. They also added their own rewards. The children came up with "3 donuts, medals,  Lollipops and money."

Knight

The children were excited to put their fingerprint onto the Hartsholme Academy knight. We spoke about the different knights we have already seen in our community and what they look like.

Learning outdoors

Today the children have loved being outside in the sunshine!
The children worked together to chop the vegetables to make a yummy soup. They demonstrated that they could use tools safely and could manage risks without direct supervision. We talked about our favourite vegetables and why they are healthy for us.



In the afternoon the children learnt about tally charts, what they are and how we can create one. The children drew their favourite vegetable from the options given onto a sticky note. This was then displayed as a bar chart so that the children could see how many of their friends liked the given vegetable. We talked about which one was the most popular and which one was the least. The children could explain their reasoning and knew that the carrot was the most popular as it was the biggest number. By implementing the bar chart, the children learnt how a dash in the tally represents one vegetable. The children as a class watched their peers mark the dashes into the tally and then had a go at doing their own.

Ducklings

We are so excited in FS1

The baby ducklings have hatched!
The children held them gently and we spoke about what changes will happen to the ducklings as they get bigger. We looked at their features and spoke about why they have webbed feet.
The children are so excited to see if the next one is hatched tomorrow!

Patterns

Today the children have been learning about patterns. To help us, we were given a very exciting challenge from the rabbit out of Alice in Wonderland. During the lesson we spoke about what a pattern is and how we can create one using the skittles. The children worked in groups to recreate the given pattern. They then followed the instructions, putting the skittles onto the tray and watched as I poured the magic water over the skittles. The children were so excited as they watched the colours draw to the centre like a rainbow!

After the lesson, the children applied their knowledge to the task. Which involved creating a pattern on the Mad Hatters Hat as the nasty queen had broken his. The children did a brilliant job!
